Project Roles

According to PMBOK, the project is defined as a temporary endeavor undertaken to a create unique product, service, or result. There are many roles involved in the project. The important roles among them are:

• Project Sponsor: The person who is accountable throughout the lifespan of the project or program and prioritizes the project and program based on business value.
• Steering Committee: The Steering committee (also known as Project Board) is a decision-making body that consists of top managers and decision-makers who provide, review and monitor strategic direction and policy guidance to a team and other stakeholders. Steering committee board members include the project sponsor, PMO staff, and senior user.
• Project Management Office (PMO): A project management office (PMO) is an entity within the organization that ensures compliance with project governance, process and facilities. They are responsible for sharing of resources, methodologies, tools, and techniques for improving project management in terms of schedule, cost, quality, risk, and other facets. PMOs have many potential roles in aligning work with strategic goals, engaging and collaborating with stakeholders, developing talent, and realizing value from investments in projects. Sometimes it may be part of the Center of Excellence (CoE). 
• Project Manager: The person who is responsible for tactical direction such as executing the project objective that’s set by the project sponsor (via project charter), steering committee, and PMO.
• Project Coordinator: The person who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of their assigned project through coordination, and communication between team members and the project manager. This role is important when the team members are distributed in many locations.
